Jag, a 23-year-old Canadian who played for the Ottawa Senators, was killed in a shooting in Hamilton, Ontario, near where he lived with his family.
Jag’s father, Mike, said in a statement that his son was a “nice kid” who was “a little over the top.”
“My heart breaks for my family, friends, and teammates.
We are all mourning the loss of a friend, and we ask for privacy at this time,” Mike Jag said.”
We are thankful for the efforts of the Hamilton Police and the community to bring justice to the killer.
We will continue to work hard to heal this community and bring justice for Jag’s killer.”
A statement from the family of Jag said Jag was a father of two sons and a husband of three women.
Jag graduated from St. Boniface College in Ottawa and had worked in broadcasting, according to a biography posted on his profile on Instagram.
He also attended St. Patrick’s College in Hamilton.
Jag was last seen wearing a red sweater and dark blue pants and had a beard, according a police news release.
Mike Jag spoke with CBC News on Wednesday afternoon about Jag’s death and the family’s grief.
Jag played for Ottawa during his career, the CBC reported.
Mike said he hopes Jag’s family “will get the answers they need and the support they need to move forward.”
The Jag family released a statement via the hockey website, hockeyfights.ca, saying they are grieving the loss and that Mike Jag “was a wonderful son, husband, father, brother, and friend.”
“Our thoughts are with Jag’s wife, daughter, son, granddaughter, and all his family during this very difficult time,” the statement read.
Mike added that Jag’s “beautiful smile, love of the game, and incredible sense of humour made him an integral part of our Ottawa Senators organization.”
He added that Mike is “heartbroken” and that “there is no reason to lose a great person like Jag.”
Jag was shot at about 8:30 p.m.
Wednesday as he walked down a sidewalk in the area of College Street and King Street.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jag’s death has renewed debate over the role police played in the incident.
“The community has always been concerned about police accountability, but this incident is especially troubling,” a statement on the Hamilton police department’s website read.
A Hamilton police spokesperson told CBC News that the incident remains under investigation.
“The Hamilton Police Service takes all reports of officer-involved shootings very seriously and investigates every such allegation,” they said.
The CBC reported that the Hamilton Regional Police have opened an internal investigation into Jag’s shooting.
The shooting occurred less than a week after the death of former U.S. basketball player Jason Collins, who was shot dead in his apartment in Atlanta.
Collins was shot in the head after he allegedly resisted arrest and a police officer tried to detain him.
